Wilson Gardener is a collaborative project of artists Kent Wilson and Joanna Gardener, founded in 2024. Bringing together diverse practices in curation, education, writing, design, and music, Wilson Gardener combines a shared interest in collaborative practice to create their recent body of work in painting. Exploring figurative, still life, and abstraction, their art is joyous, raucous and bold. Explosions of form and colour bring dynamic energy to the canvas, built up over many layers and a process of alternating interplay between the artists in the studio. The artists have exhibited separately in commercial galleries, public institutions, festivals, and artist-run-initiatives throughout Australia, Europe, and the US. They have been recipients of numerous grants for their individual practices, including from the Australia Council and CreativeVic.

Kent Wilson works across a variety of media, has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, been shortlisted in awards (Linden Art Prize, Incinerator Art Award), and commissioned for collections. His art has been shown in artist-run-initiatives (BUS Projects, Seventh, Blindside, Shifted, Trocadero, c3), public institutions (Incinerator, Manningham, Linden), commercial galleries (Anna Pappas Gallery, Stockroom Kyneton) and festivals (Adelaide Fringe, LOOP Barcelona). As curator, he has produced dozens of exhibitions in ARIs, commercial galleries, public institutions, and festivals. Kent co-founded and co-directed the Kyneton Contemporary Art Triennial (2018, 2022), and was Senior Curator at La Trobe University (2017-2022). He holds a PhD in Fine Art, a Masters of Teaching, and a Bachelor of Commerce.

Joanna Gardener has worked on a wide variety of diverse projects internationally, primarily in New York, San Francisco, Boston, and Barcelona, with her most recent Australian outing being at ACMI, Melbourne. She has designed for award winning theatre companies in Europe, as well as institutions like the American Folk Art Museum, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Museum of Victoria, the Melbourne Planetarium, and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. A School of Design and Architecture lecturer at Swinburne University, Joanna is currently undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences at RMIT University, with joint supervision from the School of Art.
